Visit to Pevensey Castle and lunch Wednesday 17 July 2024

A visit has been arranged to Pevensey Castle on Wednesday, 17^th July.  This will be followed by a lunch at the Smugglers Restaurant which is but a short walking distance away.  Details are as below:

ARRIVAL  10.15 to 10.30 am  17^th July

Park at the Smugglers Restaurant, High Street, Pevensey BN24 5LF where there is a reasonable sized car park.     Coffee may be available.

PEVENSEY CASTLE   11 am

The castle is a walk of about 5/10 minutes away up the High Street.

A guided tour around the Castle has been arranged from 11 am lasting for about 1/1½ hours.  The Castle is managed  by English Heritage with free entry to members, otherwise there is a charge of £8.07 per person or £6.88 for those claiming concessions.

Pevensey Castle dates back over 16 centuries beginning as a large Roman fort and is said to be the landing place for William the Conqueror. At that time it was a coastal site (now 5 miles inland) and in the following centuries a Norman castle, keep and gatehouse were built in one corner of the fort with later additions in 1250.  The Castle was strengthened against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Pevensey itself, being a coastal port, became a member of the prestigious Cinque Ports system with a Royal Charter granted by King John in 1207.

LUNCH  1pm

Lunch is booked in a separate room at the Smugglers for 1pm.  A fixed price menu with 3 courses for £15 has been agreed.  A copy of the menu is attached.

Other local attractions that could be visited on foot are the small Pevensey Court House/Museum with the Gaol beneath,  both of which are about 50 yds away from the restaurant.  There is also St Nicolas Church which opened its doors in 1216, a fine example of early English architecture and Grade 1 Listed.  It is just a short distance off the High Street.
