Miscellany

Brighton Centre Notes for February 2024 Miscellany
We have been subjected to almost 4 weeks or wet and windy weather, with few fine days, not ideal for open motoring, with most Morgans being tucked away in their garages,
On Sunday 21st January our noggin was held at The Fountain, Ashurst for lunch and skittles, our thanks to Chris Woods for arranging this.
Our Biannual General Meeting is being held at The Jack and Jill, Brighton Road, Clayton, on Sunday 18th February 2024, when I will be standing down as Centre Secretary.
Don’t forget to check our website, special thanks to Geoff Roberts for his stewardship, for the latest news and events,

Brighton Centre Notes for January 2024 Miscellany
Winter is with us, and many of us will be cosseting our lovely cars in our garages and using the tin tops, but the occasional bright, dry and sunny days may tempt us for an odd foray.
Our meeting at Nymans was at the last moment deferred by a week as the weather was atrocious on the 16th November, as Alan emailed, it was raining ‘felines and canines’ all day; a great decision as the weather was kind and on the 23rd and Nymans was decorated for Christmas. Our December Noggin was limited to 30 and held at the Cafe at Perryhill Orchards, Hartfield; our thanks to Marilyn and David for arranging this, always difficult to find a venue in December.

Mogfest last year attracted more entrants for the Concours than we’ve had for a long time; due largely to the introduction of the Morgan Historic Register class and the reincarnated Mognificent trophy. It would be great if we could do even better in 2024 when the plan is to rerun both MHR and  Mognificent events again. The MHR concours will remain largely the same but we might tweak the format for Mognificent. Although the event was successful last year, there’s an opportunity to make Mognificent more fun both in the Centre preliminaries and in the Mogfest final. The big question is; how do we do this ?
For those that don’t know, Mognificent was run not as a formal Concours but as a competition for people to demonstrate ‘how much you love your Morgan’. It was also different in that everyone who attended Mogfest was invited to judge both the cars and the ‘my Morgan story’ displayed on each entrant’s windscreen. Amazingly, over 100 people had a go at judging and whilst some (naughty skalllywags) took the easy route of just voting for their own Centre’s representative, most really enjoyed the opportunity to have a go at a bit of judging, and many commented on how tricky but enjoyable it was.

This set us to wondering whether we should just repeat the competition next year or change it to make it even more fun and interesting. What could we do to make the event more fun in the both the Centre prelims and at the Mogfest finals ? Could Centres combine their prelims with other activities ? And do we include other activities in the Mogfest finals (like spark plug or wheel changing races, photo competitions, or ‘identify the parts of a Morgan’ quizzes?  Answers please to email: concours@morgansportscarclub.com

There have been considerable issues over group insurance, these have now been resolved, and we now do not have to provide numbers; a copy of our events list will suffice by adding memberevents@morgansportscarclub.com to our email list of future events.

With every good wish for a happy, healthy and memorable 2024.

Richard Miers

Brighton Centre Notes for December 2023 Miscellany
The clocks have changed and the sun is not much in evidence. Winter is with us; so not too long to Christmas, Our members met at the Jack and Jill, Clayton, on 5th November, to watch the Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and enjoy an excellent Pub lunch.
On 16th November we met for lunch at Nymans NT, Handcross, and on 3rd December lunch at the Cafe. Perryhill Orchards, Hartfield. TN7 4JJ.
We have no meeting planned yet for January, any ideas please to Alan. In mid Febrary we will be holding our BGM provisionally either 11th or 18th at The Jack and Jill, Clayton. Please check our website: http://www.sexmog.co,uk for further information,
Finally may I wish all our Centre members, and Morgan owners everywhere, a very Happy Christmas and a memorable and healthy 2024
Richard Miers

Already the evenings are drawing in, and by the time this is published the clocks will have been turned back and Winter will be be coming, although I do remember at the end of last November there were still some bright sunny days and a last chance to enjoy your open top Morgans.
Some of our members attended the Morgans at Edenbridge Motor Show on 10th September. Our visit to The Langham Hotel, Eastbourne was over subscribed for an excellent lunch with an equally good speaker, a retired Police Officer based at Gatwick Airport.
Future Events:
Sunday 5th November – Veteran Car Club London to Brighton Run. Our usual venue, The Jolly Tanners, is being refurbished and will not be available. Please see the website for the alternative arranged.
Thursday 16th November – Meet for lunch at midday at Nymans NT, and wander around the gardens before or after.
Sunday 3rd December (Provisional) = Lunch at Taywell Farm Shop, Goudhurst

After a disappointing August following on from a wet and windy July, it is a relief that as I write this report the weather has changed, and we have some warm and sunny days ahead.
Our visit to the 300 year old Oldland Windmill on 3rd September coincided with a Special Event Day – lots of activities for both adults and children. It is the oldest working windmill in Sussex, and is an amazing restoration by a dedicated team of volunteers.
The setting on Lodge Hill, Keymer, has great views of the  soaring South Downs near Ditchling
Following our tour of the windmill we enjoyed an excellent lunch at The Thatched Inn, our thanks to Trudi  for arranging this.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 10th October at the Langham Hotel, Eastbourne, 12 noon for lunch at 12.30, followed by a speaker – An odd thing happened at Gatwick Airport. There is secure parking for the Morgans adjacent to the hotel.
Further detail to follow about a visit to Nymans in November.

Brighton Centre Notes for September 2023 Miscellany

No comments aboiut the weather in July!

Our Centre had a very enjoyable stay at Elm Grove Country House Hotel, near Tenby, 24th to 28th August.  Visits were made to Pendine Sands, St, Davids, and the National Trust coastal property Stackpole were our social secretary Alan, with Wendy and Francis admit to getting lost. A visit to Caldey Island was planned, but parking in Tenby is an issue, although I found, on an earlier visit with HopMog, easy parking by the Palace Hotel with just a short walk to the town highlights.

Future events:

3rd September – Oaklands Windmill

10th October – Lunch with speaker at the Langham Hotel in Eastbourne

Brighton Centre Notes for June 2023 Miscellany

With the better weather the Brighton Centre has been active, thanks to Tony and April Wright for organising our April visit to Wych Cross and Nutley Windmill, Mike Fenwick for our  excellent Spring Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club in May and also John Sillicorn for the tour of Sovereign Harbour.
I know a walk is planned for the 9th June, but as John Loveridge is having health issues, I do not know who is leading it around Wilmington and The Long Man, unfortunately I am attending a music and walking festival in the Yorkshire Dales.
We all pass our good wishes to John, and pray he reponds to the treatment he is receiving.

Brighton Centre Notes for April 2023 Miscellany
Our New Year started with a well-attended lunch at the Rogin Hood, Ickelsham on 19th January. This was followed by our February meeting. on the 22nd, a  visit to Batemans and lunch at The Heathfield Tavern.
Our planned March noggin on the 15th;  a private visit to the multi-award-winning McBeans Orchids, followed by a carvery roast lunch at The Rainbow, Cooksbridge, was so popular a limit had to be imposed with a waiting list.
The SexMog website has full details of these and future events. We are very fortunate to have members arranging and organising our noggins.

Future Events:
30th April   Pub lunch at The Roebuck Hotel, Wych Cross, followed by a visit to Nutley Windmill.

Brighton Centre Notes for March 2023 Miscellany
The prolonged cold spell in Decermber, followed by a wet January, did not deter good attendances for our early December Christmas Party, and January meeting at The Robin Hood, Ickelsham, although most members drove their tin tops.
As I am writing this report the sun is streaming through the window, and the days are noticeably longer, an
indication that Spring is on its way, with the opportunity to enjoy our great cars.
Over the next 4 months we have some interesting events planned, see below.

Brighton Centre notes for January 2023 Miscellany
As a sunny and eventful 2022 is consigned to our memories, may I express our thanks to all those who contributed, in one way or another, to the running of our Centre.

On Thursday, 19th January, we have lunch at The Robin Hood, Ickelsham. Further Noggins are in the planning stage, and we do need members to suggest and organise future events, please liaise with Alan Sharpe.

Finally, best wishes for a happy and healthy 2023, and do keep checking our website.

Brighton Centre notes for December 2022 Miscellany
The clocks having reverted to winter time and the weather becoming cooler and more unsettled, the balmy days of a hot and sunny Summer seem long past. Time to have the hoods up and use a gamp (umbrella).

A big thank you to those members who have been involved with organising our Noggins throughout the past year, especially our 40th Anniversary Garden Party.  Events are an important part of our Center Membership; Alan Sharpe, our Social Secretary,  would really like to hear from you with ideas and suggestions for 2023.

With every good wish for Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2023 especially to members of SexMog and to the wider community of Morgan owners everywhere.

Brighton Centre notes for November 2022 Miscellany
Now we are truly in Autumn, daylight is shrinking and after a wonderful summer, the attendance at our last couple of noggins has been a little thin for both our visit to Pashley Manor on 24th September and the visit to The Royal Oak, Barcobe for a skittles challenge. As a relatively small centre, new members are assured of a warm welcome to our monthly meetings.

Sunday 4th December, Christmas Party 12,00 to 3.00pm in Copthorne, food to share, further information to follow.

Thursday 19th January, The Robin Hood, Main Road, Ickelsham.

Brighton Centre notes for October 2022 Miscellany
We have enjoyed truly amazing summer sun, ideal weather to enjoy our Morgans; almost too hot at times (for me). This was especially true on the day of the visit to Sussex Prarie Gardens on 14th August, when 11 hardy Morgans managed to find some shade. The event was kindly organised by David and Marilyn.
Our September schedule had to be revised as the Firle Hill Climb was canceled in perpetuity. Alan arranged an alternative Noggin at Pashley Manor Gardens on Saturday 24th.
Our October lunch and skittles meeting is to be held at The Royal Oak, Barcombe. BN8 5BA, on Sunday 9th. It is important that you telephone Antony Gibbons on M. 07768 520545 or 01424 892612 by 1st October if you are attending so catering can be arranged.
Let’s hope for some fair autumn sun before we have to wrap up our cars and take to the tin tops.

Dairy Date:

Brighton Centre notes for September 2022 Miscellany

What amazing weather for us to enjoy our Morgans during the last month, with two events, an excellent lunch and talk by a royal protection officer for both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh with many amusing anecdotes, followed by our 40th Anniversary Party hosted by our social secretary, Alan and Wendy at Gun Hill and attended by 76 MSCC members, wives and friends, fortunately the weather remained fine although rather overcast. Entertainment was provided by Marco the magician and various centre members in the form of readings, poetry, Cinderella??… by the wives and the Morgan Yokels with a rendition?? of some well known west country folk song, they were holding large cut-outs of some rather dishy ladies, perhapds someone could enlighten me.

On 14th August we have a visit to Sussex Prairie Gardens, and on 25th September the Firle Hill Climb at Selmeston. October event TBA.
A note for your diaries, the Christmas Party is Sunday 1st December at Copthorne.

Brighton Centre Notes for July 2022 Miscellany

The unpredictable weather for the meeting on 15th May, for the Firle Horse Trials and Country Fayre affected our attendance with just seven brave and rather soggy Club Morgans plus two others on that day.

By the time this goes to press we will have held our 12 June meeting with lunch at the Berwick Inn followed by a visit to the private Filching Motor Museum will have been held. A very good response by members to this event, organised by John Loveridge.

Jeff Deere, who is arranging our 7 July club lunch at The Langham Hotel, Eastbourne, needs to finalise numbers.

Details of the July birthday party will be brought to you by email and website. If you are not a computer user, please telephone Alan Sharpe on 01825 872010 for more information.

Brighton Centre notes for June 2022 Miscellany

Although we are into early summer and the highways and byways are a delight there is still a cool feel when the sun is obscured by  cloud. In spite of the cold weather, we had an excellent turnout for the visit to the Wings Museum preceded by lunch at Tulleys on April 23rd. Our thanks to Jeff and Karen Deere for organizing this event.
On 1st and 4th May, Alan and Wendy hosted bluebell walks, talks, and refreshments in four well-subscribed visits to their home in Gun Hill, a very pleasant way to get to know fellow group members. On 15th May we will have displayed up to 20 Mogs at the Firle Horse Trails and Country Fair.

Brighton Centre notes for April 2022 Miscellany

Our January Biennial General Meeting marked the 40th Anniversary of the Brighton Centre and was attended by over 50 members, including one active founder member, Bruce Campbell. Paul Hawthorn stepped down as Centre Secretary, having very ably and effectively filled the role for a number of years. There is an old adage ‘never volunteer’ well after a long silence with threats of the centre’s closure, as a new member, did just that, so please bear with me as I ease myself into the role,
I look forward to meeting and getting to know you all during our social events.

Events:

By the time this goes to press a Noggin will have been held on 6th March at The Jolly Sportsman, East Chiltington.

Brighton Centre notes for March 2022 Miscellany

Our first meeting for 2022 was a return to The Spur at Slindon on 9th January. It was a lovely sunny day if a bit cold and a good selection of Morgans parked outside. Although we asked to be in the restaurant we were put in the Skittle Alley which although it meant we had the room to ourselves did not have the same ambience as the restaurant and was a little bit squashed. 29 people however enjoyed some good food.

By the time you read this we will have held our postponed BGM at the Jack and Jill Clayton and I will have retired as centre secretary and Vikki will have stood down as social coordinator. We wish our successors success in their new positions.

Our March meeting is Sunday lunch at The Jolly Sportsman East Chiltington on Sunday 6th March at 12 noon. If you have not already booked you might just have time if you email Geoff Heath immediately with your menu choices. Details on our website.

For April we will have a lunch at Tulleys Farm on Wednesday 27th April at 12 noon followed by a visit to the Wings Museum Brantridge Lane near Balcombe. This event is being organised by Jeff and Karen who will be sending round an email with booking details shortly. It will also be on our website.

In May we are have arranged for a display of Morgans at The Firle Horse Trials/Country Fair on Sunday 15th May. There will be more details shortly but if you would like to include your car in the display please email Vikki at pavmog@outlook.com.

Forthcoming events:

March 6th Sunday lunch at the Jolly Sportsman, Chapel Lane, East Chiltington, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 3BA.

April 27th (Wednesday) Lunch at Tulleys Farm, Turners Hill Road, Crawley, West Sussex RH10 4PD followed by a visit to the Wings Museum near Balcombe.

May 15th A car display at the Firle Horse Trials/Country Fair, Firle Place, West Firle, Lewes, East Sussex BN8 6LP

That’s all from me

Paul

Brighton Centre notes for February 2022 Miscellany

I hope that you all had a great Christmas and New Year. Nothing to report this month except our next meetings.

Our February meeting is our much postponed BGM or should I say TGM on 13th February at ‘The Jack and Jill’ at Clayton.  This will be from 12 noon for lunch and the TGM will be at 2pm. Again the pub will need to know numbers in advance so let Vikki know if you will be coming by 7th February.

Vikki’s telephone number is at the top of these notes or send an email to pavmog@outlook.com.

At the time of writing we have not got a meeting planned for March but hopefully by the time you read this something will have been arranged and circulated.

For April we will have a lunch at Tulleys Farm on Wednesday 27th April at 12 noon followed by a visit to the Wings Museum Brantridge Lane near Balcombe. More details next month.

Forthcoming events:

February 13th 2022 The postponed Biennial General Meeting and Lunch at The Jack and Jill, Brighton Road, Clayton BN6 9PD.

March – details later

April  27th (Wednesday) Lunch at Tulleys Farm, Turners Hill Road, Crawley, West Sussex RH10 4PD followed by a visit to the Wings Museum near Balcombe.

That’s all for this month.

Paul

Brighton Centre notes for December Miscellany

Vikki and I have just returned from The Jolly Tanners at Staplefield Green for the Annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. It was a a beautiful day, chilly but bright sunshine and in front of the pub was a line of both 3 and 4 wheel Morgans and more filled the car park. Those that could not get in (like ourselves) parked around the green which was lined on all 3 sides by various types of classic and vintage cars. Alan and Joan Endean left their Morgan at home and came down in their lovely 1927 Austin 12/4 which attracted a lot of attention and later they travelled on to Brighton. It was great to see so many Morgans in one place on such a wonderful day and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves. We certainly did!

Our October meeting was our much postponed Spring (now Autumn) Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club which should originally have happened in May 2020. 60 members enjoyed a very nice lunch and it was great to see so many people in one place again after this very difficult 18 months. After the lunch the usual awards were presented. The ‘wings’ to Alan Francis and Wendy for their fortnightly ‘Zoom’ quizzes which kept us in touch and entertained during the lockdowns, and the Sexmog spoon to John Loveridge for his triumph in adversity when the Firle Revival Hillclimb was cancelled 2 days before it was due to take place and he organised a visit to Michelham Priory instead and managed to arrange for us to park on the lawns inside the moated grounds. This was followed by a raffle for Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. Our thanks to Mike and Jo Fenwick for organising the Lunch, to David and Marilyn Neary for organising the raffle and to Pat Miles for the table decorations.

By the time you read this our Christmas lunch at The Cricketers at Duncton on 5th December will be about to happen or will have already have happened. For January we have arranged a Sunday Lunch at ‘The Spur’ at Slindon on 9th January, and for February we will be holding our much postponed BGM on 13th February probably at ‘The Jack and Jill’ at Clayton although this is yet to be confirmed.

Forthcoming events:

January 9th 2022 Sunday Lunch at The Spur, Valley View, London Road, Slindon, Arundel, West Sussex BN18 0NE.

February 13th 2022 The postponed Biennial General Meeting and Lunch, probably at The Jack and Jill at Clayton, but still to be confirmed.

We wish you all a Happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year. See you all in 2022.

Paul and Vikki

Brighton Centre notes for November Miscellany

Our September meeting was due to be a picnic and spectating at the Firle Hillclimb Revival but unfortunately the event had to be cancelled 48 hours before it was due to take place when the farmer on whose land the paddock and parking area had been arranged decided he did not want cars there. At very short notice John Loveridge rearranged our meeting to a visit and picnic at nearby Michelham Priory with parking inside the grounds. 19 people and 9 Morgans came and enjoyed a lovely day out. Our thanks and well done John for reorganising this at such short notice.

For November there will be our usual gathering on the 1st Sunday 7th November for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, meeting at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green RH17 6EF. If you want to have lunch at the pub phone them direct on 01444 400335.

At the time of writing we have nothing planned for December, so watch our website and email group for details as soon as something is arranged.

Forthcoming events:

7th November: Veteran Car Run at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green RH17 6EF.

December – Look at website for information.

Paul and Vikki

Brighton Centre notes for October Miscellany

Our first try at a midweek meeting went very well with 39 people for lunch including several new faces attending their first meeting, John and Francesca Loveridge, Norman and Claudia Fisher, Peter Tierney and Eva Fredholm. I hope you enjoyed the day and look forward to meeting you at future events. The pub coped very well and the treasure hunt, although challenging was very well received. Congratulations to winners John and Francesca Loveridge and our thanks to David and Marilyn Neary and Geoff Roberts for organising the event.

By the time you read this our September event at the Firle Hill Climb and Revival will have happened and I will report on that next month.

If you have not yet booked for the Autumn Lunch on October 10th and wish to come phone Mike and Jo Fenwick immediately  and let them know 01883 742660. Not sure if you will already be too late.

For November there will be our usual gathering on the 1st Sunday 7th November for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, meeting at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green RH17 6EF. If you want to have lunch at the pub phone them direct on 01444 400335.

Forthcoming events:

10th October: Autumn Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club, High Beech Lane, Lindfield, Haywards Heath RH16 1SL.

7th November: Veteran Car Run at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green RH17 6EF.

Look forward to seeing you at the Autumn Lunch.

Paul and Vikki

Brighton Centre notes for September Miscellany

We had our first meeting since 8th March 2020 on 25th July, a ‘Freedom’ barbecue at Malcolm and Hazel’s house and guess what it absolutely bucketed it down with rain. Only Les and Maggie and Vikki and I ventured out in Morgans and on our way we went through several floods. When we got home we found that there had been no rain at all! It was nice to see so many people face to face for the first time since the last meeting rather than on Zoom. Welcome to new members Martin and Vivienne Ray who joined us for the first time. Our thanks to Malcolm and Hazel for hosting this event for us and for keeping everyone dry and still being able to barbecue. We very much enjoyed it despite the weather.

For September we will revert to the 2nd Sunday with a day at The Firle Hill Climb Revival. John Loveridge has organised for us a level and flat grassed area near the paddock where we can park and picnic (bring your own tables and chairs). This will be a spectating day unless you have entered your car to climb the hill (entries closed for this on 30th June). There is no charge for spectators but as this is a charity event for 2 East Sussex charities for disabled children it is hoped that all will make a suitable donation. As this is a revival meeting period dress is welcomed. Although this is called The Firle Hill Climb Revival it is not in Firle itself. The address is The Paddock, Bopeep Lane, Near Selmeston BN26 6UJ. Let John know if you are going to attend at jonmaglov@gmail.com

On October 10th will be our rearranged Spring Lunch now an Autumn Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club. Details will by now have been circulated to members and will be on our website. Brighton Centre notes for August Miscellany

By the time you read these notes we hope that most restrictions will have been lifted, that we will have held our first meeting since March 2020 and that our future programme is more secure.

David and Marilyn Neary and Geoff Roberts are organising our August meeting on Wednesday 11th August meeting at 1.00pm for lunch in the upstairs room of The Bent Arms in Lindfield. After lunch there will be a simple walking treasure hunt around Lindfield taking approximately 1 hour. There is nothing to collect, just searching for the answers to clues. You are welcome to come just to the lunch, or just for the treasure hunt if you wish. The Bent Arms will be supplying a menu nearer the date, which should be available on our website and sent round our email ring, and we will be asking for numbers and menu choices, which should be sent to David Neary at mogsatappletree@googlemail.com

John Turrell has advised us of the Village Fete and Carnival at Ashington on Saturday 21st August. They have a small car show associated with the event and would be pleased to have some Morgans in the show, and they can also join in with the procession if they feel so inclined. An application form has been sent round the group and is available on our website.

On October 10th will be our rearranged Spring Lunch now an Autumn Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club, and for November there will be our usual gathering on the 1st Sunday 7th November for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, meeting at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green providing the pub has survived the pandemic lockdowns. More details of all of these events soon and on our website and in Miscellany.

A big thank you to Alan Frances and Wendy for organising the fortnightly quizzes on ‘Zoom’ which kept us in touch with each other during the dark days of lockdown even if some of the questions were somewhat devious. They were very much appreciated by us all. These have now ended and hopefully will not be needed again.

Forthcoming events:

Wednesday 11th August 1pm for lunch at The Bent Arms in Lindfield followed by a walking Treasure Hunt round the village.

21st August (Saturday) Ashington Village Fete and Carnival.

12th September: The Firle Hill Climb Revival, The Paddock, Bopeep Lane, Near Selmeston BN26 6UJ.

10th October: Autumn Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club.

7th November(provisional): Veteran Car Run at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green

Keep safe everyone.

Brighton Centre notes for June Miscellany

Not much has happened since last month but we did take the Plus 4 out for a run on ‘Drive it Day’ from home up to Appledore across to New Romney and back via Lydd, Camber and Rye. A nice run out but not many classic cars in evidence -we saw just 3 during the whole run.

We still seems to be on track for the lifting of all restrictions on 21st June, and our first meeting on Sunday 25th July will be a ‘Freedom’ barbeque which Malcolm and Hazel  are hosting in their garden just outside Forest Row from 12 noon. Malcom and Hazel will have 2 barbeques (one specifically for vegetarians) and will provide rolls and salads. Please bring your own chairs, tables, plate and cutlery as well as the food you want to barbeque and whatever you want to drink. They will need to know numbers by 18th July so please email them to let them know you are coming by 18th July to malcolmmath44@gmail.com. The address is Little Tompsets, Tompsets Bank, Forest Row, East Sussex, RH18 5LN. It is a little bit off the beaten track so Malcolm will put directions on our website and in a group email. As I mentioned last month this date has been chosen to avoid clashing with Mogfest, the British GP and the Silverstone Classic.

Our August meeting is planned to be lunch at a pub in Lindfield followed by a walking treasure hunt round the village. This is being organised by David and Marilyn Neary and Geoff Roberts and is provisionally on Sunday 8th August at 12 noon. However at the time of writing it has not yet been possible to contact potential pubs to establish availability. As soon as further details are available these will be put on our website and hopefully in next month’s Miscellany.

For September we will revert to the 2nd Sunday with a day at The Firle Hill Climb Revival. John Loveridge has organised for us a level and flat grassed area near the paddock where we can park and picnic (bring your own tables and chairs). This is mainly a spectating day but it is possible for 2 cars to participate (climb the hill) at a cost of £50 per car, an entry form is on The Firle Hill Climb Revival website and the closing date for entries is 30th June. However only cars 1989 or earlier are allowed to drive up the hill.

On October 10th will be our rearranged Spring Lunch now an Autumn Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club, and for November will be our usual gathering on the 1st Sunday 7th November for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, meeting at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green providing the pub has survived the pandemic lockdowns. More details of all of these events soon and on our website and in Miscellany.

Alan Frances and Wendy will be continuing to organise the fortnightly quizzes on ‘Zoom’ until mid July so we hope to see some of you at these.

Forthcoming events:

25th July: ‘Freedom’ Barbeque in Malcolm and Hazel’s garden, Little Tompsets, Tompsets Bank, Forest Row East Sussex RH18 5LN from 12 noon.

8th August (provisional) Lunch at a pub in Lindfield followed by a walking Treasure Hunt round the village. More details next month.

12th September: The Firle Hill Climb Revival, The Paddock Bopeep Lane, Near Selmeston BN26 6UJ.

10th October: Autumn Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club.

7th November(provisional): Veteran Car Run at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green

We hope that there will be no changes to the government’s  road map and that all these events can proceed as planned.

Keep safe everyone.

Paul and Vikki

Brighton Centre notes for May 2021 Miscellany

At the time of writing the country still seems to be on track for the lifting of all restrictions on 21st June, so with that in mind we are pressing ahead with arranging a programme of events from July onwards.

For July Malcolm and Hazel will host a barbeque in their garden Sunday 25th July. We have chosen that date to avoid clashing with Mogfest, the British GP and the Silverstone Classic. For September we will revert to the 2nd Sunday with a day at The Firle Hill Climb Revival where members can if they wish drive up the hill or just spectate. On October 10th will be our rearranged Spring Lunch now an Autumn Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club. For November will be our usual gathering on the 1st Sunday 7th November for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, meeting at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green providing the pub has survived the pandemic lockdowns. More details of all of these events soon and on our website and in Miscellany.

So for your diaries:

25th July: Barbeque at Malcolm and Hazel’s garden in Forest Row.

12th September: The Firle Hill Climb Revival, Bopeep Lane, Near Firle.

10th October: Autumn Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club.

7th November: Veteran Car Run provisionally at The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield Green

Hopefully we will have some more events for you next month.

Keep safe everyone.

Brighton Centre Notes for May Miscellany

As I have already reported on our email ring, because of the current Covid-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing all centre meetings are suspended until further notice. The Spring Lunch due to be held on 10th May has been postponed to Sunday 11th October by which time I hope this pandemic will be over.

As soon as it is safe to do so we will start rearranging meetings and will let you all know via our email ring and on our website.

In the meantime keep safe and I hope it is not too long before we are able to use and enjoy our Morgans again.

Paul

Brighton Centre Notes for April Miscellany

Vikki and I have just got back from our March lunchtime meeting at the Robin Hood, Icklesham. It was not too far for us to go this month as the pub is only 2 miles down the road from our house. The weather was surprisingly good, nice and sunny with only one shower of rain. 40 members sat down to a nice lunch and there were 14 Morgans in the car park. It was nice to get the Plus 4 out of the garage and give it a bit of a run. Our thanks to Les and Maggie Cornish for organising this meeting.

By contrast the February meeting couldn’t have been more different as it coincided with Storm Ciara and despite all the dire warnings 20 intrepid members made their way to The Cricketers at Duncton. Mike and Jo were assured by the landlady that all was well and in the event no one had any problems although not a single Morgan was to be seen. The dire warnings proved to be overstated and everybody enjoyed the normal good food on offer. The only problem came when it was time for the sweet when a power cut meant that some had to forego that pleasure. Vikki and I missed that meeting and Storm Ciara as we were still in France. Our thanks to Mike and Jo Fenwick for arranging the meeting.

For April David and Marilyn Neary and Geoff Roberts are organising Sunday Lunch at The Bent Arms, 98 High Street, Lindfield, West Sussex RH16 2HP on Sunday 19th April followed by a walking quiz round the pretty village of Lindfield. Meet at The Bent Arms at 12 noon for lunch by 12.30pm. The pub will need to know numbers and menu choices by Tuesday 14th April so let David and Marilyn know by email to mogsatappletree@googlemail.com. The menu is on our website. Please note this is the 3rd Sunday in April as the 2nd is Easter Sunday.

Our May meeting will be our Spring Lunch. As Barnsgate Manor has closed, the venue this year will be Haywards Heath Golf Club, High Beech Lane, Haywards  Heath, RH16 1SL. The price is £25 per head to include a welcome drink and coffee after the meal. A copy of the menu and a booking form are on our website www.sexmog.co.uk. Please send your completed booking form and cheque to Mike and Jo Fenwick at the address given on the form by 20th April.

At the time of writing a Sunday lunch has not yet been planned for June. Details next month.

Forthcoming meetings:

Sunday 19th April – Sunday lunch at The Bent Arms, 98 High Street, Lindfield, West Sussex RH16 2HP followed by a walking quiz round Lindfield.

Sunday 10th May – Spring Lunch at Haywards Heath Golf Club, High Beech Lane,  Haywards Heath RH16 1SL.

That’s all for this month. Let’s hope for some better weather so we can all use our cars.

Brighton Centre Notes for March Miscellany

As I write these notes, sitting looking out over the lovely French countryside it feels already that spring is on the way even though it is only the first week in February. We started 2020 with a very successful lunchtime meeting at the Jack and Jill at Clayton which Vikki and I organised. 52 people sat down to enjoy Sunday lunch and there were at least 12 Morgans in the car park even on a cold January day. Welcome to new members David and Alison Chapman, Alan and Christine Hill and Charlotte Lowe. We look forward to seeing you again at future meetings.

Our March meeting organised by Les and Maggie Cornish is  Sunday Lunch at The Robin Hood, Main Road, Icklesham, East Sussex TN36 4BD on Sunday 8th March from 12 noon.  The pub do not need menu choices but need to know numbers in advance so please let Les and Maggie know you are coming by email by 3rd March at the latest. The pub will need to know numbers and menu choices by Tuesday 14th April so let David and Marylin know by email to mogsatappletree@googlemail.com. The menu will be on our website. Our May meeting will be our Spring Lunch. As Barnsgate Manor has closed, the venue this year will be Haywards Heath Golf Club, High Beech Lane, Haywards  Heath, RH16 1SL. No details as yet of price or menu but these will be on our website in due course and in April Miscellany.

A correction to last month’s forward events, please note that the visit to Goodwood House will now be on Sunday 20th September to avoid a clash with the All Morgans Day at Blenheim Palace. More details later.

Brighton Centre Notes for February Miscellany

As mentioned last month Vikki and I were unable to attend the December meeting which was a Christmas Party organised by David and Marilyn Neary. 22 people attended this event and by all accounts they enjoyed the ‘silly’ games, the food and the raffle. Our thanks to David and Marilyn for organising this event. Now that all the Christmas and New Year’s festivities are out of the way it is time to turn our attention to this year’s events.

For our February meeting Mike and Jo are organising Sunday Lunch at The Cricketers at Duncton, West Sussex GU28 0LB. This will be on Sunday 9th February from 12 noon in their function room. The pub do not need menu choices but do need to know numbers in advance so please let Mike and Jo know you are coming by Monday 3rd February either by phone 01883 742660 or by email at mandjfenwick@hotmail.com.

In March Les and Maggie Cornish are organising our Sunday Lunch meeting at The Robin Hood, Main Road, Icklesham, East Sussex TN36 4BD on Sunday 8th March from 12 noon. This is very handy for Vikki and I as it is only 5 minutes along the road from us. The pub do not need menu choices but need to know numbers in advance so please let Les and Maggie know you are coming by email by 3rd March at the latest. Their email address is les.cornish@gmail.com. If you wish to see what is on the menu in advance this can be found on the pub’s website http://www.robin-hood.uk/menu.html.

Looking further ahead, at the time of writing we have no volunteers to organise anything for April. In May is our Spring Lunch on Sunday 10th May, and in June Ben Brittain has organised a visit to Goodwood House on Sunday 7th June. Please put these dates in your diary.

Forthcoming meetings:

Brighton Centre Notes for December Miscellany

Having returned from France at the beginning of the month we went to our monthly meeting on 13th October at The Highdown near Goring by Sea. This was a new venue for us and was excellent. Over 40 members attended and enjoyed a very good lunch. We will certainly be visiting this venue again. Our thanks to Dennis and Angela for organising this meeting.

Last Sunday was the annual London to Brighton run for veteran cars. Apparently the weather was better than the day before when  it poured with rain and blew a gale which probably put a number of people (including ourselves) from turning out as the number of people and Morgans was less than in previous years.

For December David and Marilyn Neary are organising an afternoon with a traditional Christmas party theme. Please feel free to wear your Christmas hat/jumper/waistcoat etc but this is by no means compulsory! This will be on Sunday 8th December from 12 noon until 4pm at the Guide Centre, Borers Arms Road, Copthorne RH10 3LU. There is parking alongside the Guide Centre and balloons will mark the entrance. Please bring a plate of food to share (either a main course or a pudding), your own drink, a wrapped item of no more than £4 in value, per person and a photo of a cherished car that you no longer have with your name in pencil on the back. There will be fun and games, music, quizzes and surprises. Please let David and Marilyn know if you will be coming by 2nd December by emailing mogsatappletree@googlemail.com or at a noggin beforehand. A good time will be had by all!

Looking forward to next year, Vikki and I are organising Sunday Lunch at The Jack and Jill at Clayton BN6 9PD in their function room on Sunday 12th January from 12 noon. We will need to know numbers by Monday 6th January. Please email us at pavmog@outlook.com. The pub do not need menu choices in advance so long as you are having a Sunday roast. However if you want something different please consult the menu on their website and phone your order through in advance. Their telephone number is 01273 843595.

Brighton Centre Notes for November Miscellany

For our September meeting on Sunday September 8th, the sun shone, such a super day for a walk on the Ashdown Forest and a pub lunch. Following coffee 13 hardy hikers walked from Giggles Pub at Fords Green Nutley to the Airman’s Grave on the Ashdown forest, where a Wellington MkII W5364 QT-H bomber, returning from a bombing raid ended its journey there, all on board were lost. The memorial at this beautiful place on the Forest is a fitting tribute. We returned to Giggles Pub to join a total 25 Sexmog and Hopmog members for a lovely lunch. Following lunch some of our group walked to Nutley Sports and Prestige Centre (who advertise in Miscellany) where owner Matthew Eade displays his classic cars for sale, including a 4 and 3 wheeler Morgan, and chatted to our group. 25 members attended this event and 9 Morgans and a Porsche 356 were displayed in the pub car park opposite the village green. Our thanks to April and Tony Wright for this report and for organising this meeting.

This month we have the usual gathering for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run at the Jolly Tanners in Staplefield Green RH17 6EF on Sunday 3rd November. As usual the Pub will be serving breakfast from 7am for the early birds who want it. If you want lunch at the pub you will need to book with them direct. Their telephone number is 01444 400335.

Brighton Centre Notes for October Miscellany

The centre meeting for August was at the Cranleigh Lions Classic Car Show and Philip Loring organised the Morgan display for both Sexmog and Hopmog. His report is: ‘ 20 Morgans attended the Cranleigh Lions Classic Car Show on 11thAugust along with around 1400 other classic cars and vehicles. Despite the rather wet & windy conditions on the days leading up to the show, the weather on the day itself was fine and dry. There was a lot to see and do amongst the many car displays, craft stalls and auto jumble. The arena action, hosted by TV presenter Mark Evans assisted by Lions Nigel West and Jamie Currie kept the crowds entertained throughout the day, culminating in in the events first ever Morgan Gymkhana. 5 cars took to the arena driven by Philip & Linda Loring, Steve & Marie Langston, Gerald & Mary Ladkin, Alan & Joan Endean and Robert and Jennifer Hillhouse. Also on display in the arena was Tim Steal’s excellent 1951 4 seater Flat Rad. The teams were put through a number of tests against the clock and after a few light hearted arguments about judges rules and perhaps a little cheating by some (who shall not be named!), Alan and Joan Endean were pronounced the worthy winners. It was a very enjoyable event indeed, very much appreciated by the event organisers, and enabled us to show off the Morgan Sports Car to quite a large crowd.’ Our thanks to Philip Loring for organising this event.

For October Dennis and Angela Pike are organising a lunch at a new venue The Highdown, Littlehampton Road, Goring by Sea BN1 6FB meeting at 12 noon. After lunch the energetic could go for a walk over Highdown which affords views over Worthing and the sea. The Highdown need to know numbers a week before so please let Dennis and Angela know you are coming by 5thOctober at angelapike36@gmail.com.

As usual the Pub will be serving breakfast from 7am for the early birds who want it. If you want lunch at the pub you will need to book with them direct. Their telephone number is 01444 400335.

Our December meeting will be a Christmas Party on Sunday 8thDecember being organised by David and Marilyn Neary at the Guide Hall in Copthorne. More details next month and on our website.

Brighton Centre Notes for September Miscellany

Our July meeting was a visit to Charleston Farmhouse the former home of the Bloomsbury Set with a buffet lunch in their new barn. 30 members attended in 16 Morgans and we understand that the afternoon went very well. Unfortunately Vikki and I were in France again so have still not been to Charleston. Last Sunday a few of us took our cars to High Salvington Windmill for their classic car afternoon which was organised by Ann and Quentin English. The weather was dry but rather overcast but there were a good selection of classic cars and motorbikes including 4 Morgans and a Cobra from our centre.

For September Tony and April Wright are organising a walk followed by lunch on the Ashdown Forest on Sunday 8thSeptember. Meet at the Giggles Pub in Nutley (on the A22 opposite the village green) at 11am for coffee followed by a walk of about 1 hour (including a couple of hills). Brighton Centre Notes for August Miscellany

Our June meeting was a visit to the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke. 15 members attended and all seemed to enjoy themselves, particularly sampling the wares in the period pub. Our thanks to John Turrell for organising this event. As I write these notes our July meeting is taking place at Charleston Farmhouse, which neither Vikki or I have been to but we have had to miss this one as we are at our house in France enjoying the most fantastic weather. A full report will appear in next month’s Miscellany.

For our August meeting, Philip Loring is coordinating a Morgan Display at the Cranleigh Lions Classic Car Show on Sunday 11thAugust.  It is now too late to book for a place on the Morgan Display but you can still go on the day and pay on the gate on the day (£10) but you will not be able to park in the dedicated Morgan area.

Brighton Centre Notes for July Miscellany

Our May meeting was our Spring Lunch which I reported on last month. Vikki and I were not able to be at the lunch this year as we were at our house in France ready to take our 1959 Plus 4 up to Vintage Revival Monthlery the following weekend which was attended by many Sexmog and Hopmog members. The weather this year was a vast improvement on the event 2 years ago with sunshine and warm temperatures on both days except for rain on Saturday morning which cancelled that mornings’ motorbike events. On Sunday it was hot and sunny and I counted 150 Morgans in the combined parking area of Vinmog, Morgan Club de France and MSCC Travel Club. Our thanks to the Vinmog team for organising such a great weekend. Unfortunately on our way in on Sunday we were caught in a slow moving queue of traffic up to the Autodrome and the clutch on the Plus 4 started to slip badly. We got back to the hotel, but the car is, as I write these notes, in a specialist British Sports Car garage outside Paris having a new clutch fitted. Hopefully we will have it back by the time you read these notes.

Brighton Centre Notes for June Miscellany

Our April meeting – a combined Drive it Day, bluebell walk and barbecue was a great success.  70  people descended on Gun Hill on a chilly cloudy day, most in their Morgans. We all had a guided tour of the bluebells (which were spectacular) and the woodland which many Sexmog and Hopmoggers helped to plant. After this we all sat down to a very nice barbeque. Our thanks to Alan Francis and Wendy for hosting this event.

Last Sunday (5thMay) was our annual Spring Lunch at Barnsgate Manor. Unfortunately Vikki and I could not be there this year as we were at our house in France but Mike Fenwick has given me this report. ‘The Spring Lunch went very well today. The weather was good and although a bit on the cold side, the sun was shining and there was a good turnout of Morgans. 61 people attended this year and the food was good, both in terms of choice and quality. Everyone seemed to have a good time and I didn’t hear any complaints. There was just a good ‘buzz’ throughout the event which went on until about 5 o’clock. The Social Secretaries Award was presented to Geoffrey and Anita for all their sterling work in the last 2 years, and the Wings were presented to Malcolm Matheson for rescuing a Morgan from lying loved but unused in a garage for 9 years, restoring it to its former glory and putting it back on the road where it belongs. The raffle was held in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice in memory of Beverley Wilson and raised £260 for the charity.’ Our thanks to Mike and Jo for organising the lunch again this year.

For June we have something slightly different. John and Jan are arranging to visit Milestones Museum in Basingstoke on Sunday 9thJune. It is like a minature Beamish but all under cover. It is Hampshire’s museum of living history. Explore the museums streets, shops and buildings, 1940s sweet shop, a collection of vintage vehicles and much more. Have a go in the penny arcade!! Tickets are priced at £11.05 if booked online or £13 on the day. The museum website is https://www.milestonesmuseum.org.uk.

There is a café on site open from 11.00 to 16.30 and serving hot food from 12.00 till 14.00. The address of the Museum is: Milestones Museum, Leisure Park, Churchill Way West, Basingstoke, Hampshire RG22 6PG. Telephone 01256 639550.

John and Jan suggest arriving at approximately 11.30am for what should be a very interesting day.

Brighton Centre Notes for May Miscellany

Spring has definitely arrived early this year with the very mild weather in February and March. Our March meeting was the final meeting organised by Geoffrey and Anita at the Greyhound in Cocking near Midhurst. 33 members enjoyed lunch on a breezy day with some showers and there were 8 Morgans in the car park.

By the time you read this our April meeting – a combined Drive it Day, bluebell walk and barbecue will have happened. A report will appear next month.

Our meeting for May is our annual Spring Lunch at Barnsgate Manor on Sunday 5th May. If you haven’t already booked it will probably be to late but you could try emailing Mike Fenwick at:manjfenwick@hotmail.com and see if he can squeeze you in.

BRIGHTON CENTRE (SEXMOG) – NOTES FOR MISCELLANY March 2019

By the time you read this Anita and I will no longer be the Social Secretary’s for Sexmog as our two year term will have expired at the BGM in February.  We have enjoyed the role we have played in arranging numerous pub lunches and other events during the past two years but now it is time to hand over to someone else.

In January, and after our original venue closed without notice, we made a welcome return to the Sportsman at Goddards Green.  On a bright sunny day 33 members enjoyed an excellent meal whilstour 12 Morgans attracted much attention in the car park outside.

In March we return to the Greyhound in Cocking.  Set in the South Downs on the route from Midhurst to Chichester this pub will be familiar to those who came last year and to others who may have passed by on the way to Goodwood. A lovely old freehouse where a warm welcome and good home cooked food is guaranteed.

BRIGHTON CENTRE (SEXMOG) – NOTES FOR MISCELLANY February 2019

By the time you read this it will all sound like a long time ago, but hopefully our Christmas lunch at the Cricketers will remain in peoples memory a little longer.  Thirty seven members travelled to this fine old pub on a sunny winters day and enjoyed a splendid seasonal lunch including crackers and plenty of good cheer.  Meanwhile other customers enjoyed the spectacle of the seven Morgans parked outside.  It has been our custom for many years to contribute to charity some of the money we would have spent sending each other Christmas cards.  This year we collected £135 which we have donated to Clic Sargent.

Not as well known as Elsted but the Stag at Balls Cross also hosts a gathering of Classic Cars on New Years Day.  This year, with excellent weather, produced a splendidly diverse turnout which I’m pleased to say included three Morgans.

In February our regular Sunday lunch is combined with our BGM.  The venue is the Jack and Jill at Clayton which needs no introduction as we have been there many times in the past.

In March we are making a return visit to The Greyhound at Cocking.  Visiting for the first time last year we were very well looked after with scrumptious food in period surroundings.

BRIGHTON CENTRE (SEXMOG) – NOTES FOR MISCELLANY January 2019

A very happy, prosperous, healthy and peaceful New Year to all our members.

The annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is always an occasion to look forward to and this year dawned bright, dry and sunny albeit a little chilly. Attendance at the Jolly Tanners was down on previous years although those present enjoyed another spectacular display of veteran machinery. The recharging point at the end of the green might have been considered a modern addition but it in fact was there to service the few electric powered vehicles taking part in the run.

This month (January) our regular Sunday lunch will be at The Wheel in Burwash Common.  Always a favourite with members we hope for a good turnout to this, our first event of the New Year.

In February we will be at The Jack and Jill in Clayton. This is a combined lunch and BGM at which we elect a new Centre Secretary and Social Secretaries. For this to take place we need candidates and invite anyone interested to contact either Paul or ourselves.

Report for the December 2018 edition of Miscellany

With the advent of winter our calendar of events dwindles and consequently there is less to write about.

Sunday lunch in October took place at the Crown Inn in Horsted Keynes, a pub we visited for the first time last year.  Well supported, with 35 members present and 8 Morgans in the car park outside, we enjoyed an excellent meal in good company.

In December we make a return to the Cricketers in Duncton for our Christmas lunch.  This fine old village inn always extends a very warm welcome and we have enjoyed some excellent meals here in the past.  We will have a private room suitably decorated to put us in the Christmas spirit.  As usual members will have the opportunity to make a donation to charity in lieu of exchanging Christmas cards.

Our first event in the new year will be Sunday lunch at the Wheel Inn at Burwash Common.  This will be followed in February by a combined lunch and BGM at the Jack and Jill.  More on this later but please give consideration to Pauls communication some weeks ago when he asked for members to put their names forward to replace the centre secretary and the social secretaries.

All it remains now is for us to wish all our members a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
